Ruins and Red Fae

Fairfield Castle was visible on the way to Mount Vale. Carissa's attention drifted out the car window as she and Cameron traveled in silence. Both were too preoccupied with worry and not seeing eye to eye on how to solve the present crisis.

"I think it's a mistake," Cam finally said. He kept his eyes glued to the dirt path ahead.

"You wanted to go to Vale two weeks ago.”

Cam's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "To invite the fae to the All Hallows’ Eve celebration. Not to talk to them about a fae attempting to murder a Mossie." He took a sharp breath. "The minute the case is handed over to the fae, we'll lose control of the castle entirely and the investigation."

"You're sounding more and more like the mayor."

Cam pulled his eyes away from the road long enough to glance at her. "Why shouldn't I? Mayor Belkin's done a lot for Moss Hill. I don't see anything wrong with being more like him."

"You said yourself that the team Belkin sent saw suspicious activity today too."

"Some rocks fell, just like they did with Mrs. Alcott. It's not a big deal; it's a construction site."

"But they had already cleared the debris."

"From the areas overlooking the courtyard. Today, they traveled to the parts that are still in ruins. Of course, they encountered some danger. It doesn't mean there are ghosts or fae or anything there." His tone became more argumentative as his knuckles grew whiter around the steering wheel.

"Besides," he added, "you said you didn't want to involve the sidhe because Alden was there a few days ago and the sidhe aren't exactly friendly with ankous."

Carissa turned toward the window, staring at the castle. Part of her hoped for a sign that their deceased friend was still there. "He isn't answering my summoning spells," she said softly.

Cam looked between her and the road. "How many times have you tried?"

"I've been trying all day."

"Well, maybe he's busy."

"Busy doing what, exactly? What would an ankou be doing all day that he can't answer when magically called on?"

Carissa didn't look to see Cam's reaction this time but kept her eyes on the castle. It was a good thing she did, too, because the next second she saw something like a flash of light coming from the castle's direction. She sat up, bringing her eyes closer to the glass. Another flash meant it wasn't just her imagination.

"Did you see that?" she asked.

"See what?"

"Steer right. Turn onto Fairfield Drive."

"We missed that turn-off a while back."

"It's close enough. The ground is just grass, veer right," she stressed.

He did so, but not without an argument. "Now we're going in by ourselves? I hate to point this out, but your plans are becoming less and less logical."

"I saw something."

The tires screeched to a halt. Cari's seat belt grabbed her and yanked her back against the cushion.

Cam faced her with a wordless exasperation. Then he put the car in reverse and started to travel backward down the drive.

"What happened to ‘it's just construction?’" Cari challenged.
